Supplements

Eating healthy, nonprocessed foods should provide all the nutrients you need to function optimally. However, if you are still eating a mostly processed diet or feel you are not getting enough nutrition from your healthy diet, there are certain supplements you might want to consider. One is magnesium. Because processed foods diminish our magnesium levels, taking a magnesium supplement will help to stabilize your levels, which will actually get rid of a lot of latent anxiety. Magnesium is also one of the best antiaging minerals.

Another supplement to consider is docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It is derived from fish oil or algae, and it is also in human breast milk. A DHA deficiency has been linked to many disorders, including dementia and chronic anxiety, so it is considered a necessary supplement for neurological health, which explains why breastfeeding is so important for a baby’s neurological development. There are a lot of fish oils on the market, and they are usually combined with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which is completely fine. I’ve tried a variety of them, and most have been great. Whichever type you choose, you want to make sure that your DHA daily intake is 1,000 mg for optimal benefits.

B vitamins are very beneficial for nervous system support (vegans can be low in B vitamins, especially B12, so it’s important for them to source plant-based foods that have B12). There are numerous brands on the market for you to consider.

Another supplement I use personally for my joints is glucosamine. I’m an ex-rugby league footballer, and at the age of twenty-two I tore my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). At that point in my life I was almost broke, so I lived with that injury until I was thirty, when I received knee reconstruction surgery. As a result, glucosamine is necessary for the health of my joints, and it might be something for you to consider, especially if you are a physical performer (or ex-physical performer like me).

Last but not least are supplements that support the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are two small glands located on top of the kidneys. These glands produce a variety of hormones we cannot live without, including adrenaline and the steroids aldosterone and cortisol. Cortisol is what helps us respond to stress. It is released by the adrenal glands in response to fear or stress as part of our natural fight-or-flight mechanism. With the constant bombardment of stimuli leading naturally to stress, we are producing high levels of cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels increase our risk for depression, mental illness, and lower life expectancy (on top of a host of other health issues such as lower immune function and bone density, weight gain, heart disease, interference with learning and memory, and the list goes on and on).

The alternative-health community believes that such symptoms lead to adrenal fatigue. The scientific community is divided on this topic, as there is no scientific evidence to support it, so it is not recognized as a real diagnosis by the medical community. I’m not
